'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4: Every Detail We Know

The murder-mystery comedy Only Murders in the Building has just returned for a standout, star-studded third season. In season 3 of Only Murders, the Emmy-winning series has expanded its world beyond the Arconia, to follow a murder investigation set among the cast of a Broadway show, complete with original songs and an added layer of complications for the podcasting trio of Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez). Now that OMITB has expanded the subjects of its true-crime parody from one building's co-op board to a group of possibly-murderous thespians, we can't help but wonder where the show could go next. Read on for what we know about season 4 of Only Murders in the Building so far, to be updated as the show releases more hints of the next mystery.

Has 'Only Murders in the Building' been renewed for season 4?

Yes! The show's official Instagram announced the renewal on the same day that the Season 3 finale revealed next season's murder. (R.I.P. [spoiler].) The news also followed the tentative end of the writers strike, which means that the writing team, led by showrunner John Hoffman, can get right to work crafting the upcoming episodes. With the actors strike (hopefully) coming to an end soon, Season 4 could arrive next summer, following the show's schedule of premiering a new season each year.

When will 'Only Murders in the Building' season 4 come out?

OMITB has kept up a yearly release schedule so far, with season 1 premiering in August 2021, season 2 in June 2022, and season 3 this August. Since Season 4's announcement is coming a bit later than previous early renewals, we're guessing that the new episodes could arrive in early fall 2024.

What will 'Only Murders in the Building' season 4 be about?

Spoilers for the season 3 finale ahead. After wrapping up the true killer(s) who murdered Ben Glenroy, the season 3 finale introduced the show's next big mystery. The mood for the episode's final moments is celebratory at first, as Death Rattle Dazzle receives a rave review. Soon Sazz (Jane Lynch) shows up to join the festivities, with Charles's longtime stunt double letting herself in, as she may have "made copies of all his keys." Charles and Sazz take a selfie that gives us a moment to notice they're wearing very similar clothes, after which Sazz mentions to Charles that she wants to talk to him later about something "a little sensitive." Charles also says that he's going to grab a very rare wine from his apartment for the occasion.

Cut to Charles's dark apartment, where we see a figure that looks like Charles walking into the kitchen without turning on the lights. A shot rings out. We see a bullet hole through his window, as the bullet hits his chest and he crumples to the ground. However, it's not Charles, it's Sazz! The stunt double touches her chest and the camera panning away as she passes out and struggles for breath. And with that, OMITB has its latest murder in the building.

So many questions to answer in Season 4. Was the killer targeting Charles? That makes the most sense; it was his apartment, and Sazz has made a living off of her resemblance to him. However, there was the matter of whatever "sensitive" discussion she wanted to have with him. If the killer was watching through the windows, tracking Charles and Sazz at Oliver's party, could they have intentionally shot Sazz at the perfect time, knowing that police will assume their target was Charles? Sure I may be thinking too hard, but the show has pulled off more intricate twists. Either way, looks like Charles, Mabel, and Oliver will be very busy (and maybe looking over their own shoulders) next season.

Who will be in the cast of 'Only Murders in the Building' season 4?

Though OMITB has become known for its stellar selection of guest stars, the series also boasts a great core cast that sticks around from season to season. With all of Season 3's cast making it out alive season 3 alive (and no one moving out of the Arconia besides Mabel), but it's very likely that most of the main cast will return. This includes Steve Martin (Charles), Martin Short (Oliver), Selena Gomez (Mabel), Michael Cyril Creighton (Howard), Ryan Broussard (Will),  Jackie Hoffman (Uma), and Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Detective Williams). And of course, Jane Lynch (Sazz) will have a much larger role as her movements before her death play out in flashback.

There's also a big chance that some of the show's earlier cast members could return. James Caverly (Theo Dimas) has showed up for at least one episode every season so far, and Meryl Streep (Loretta) and Tobert (Jesse Williams) are both open to reprise their roles now that their characters are dating Oliver and Mabel, respectively. (Please, please let Loretta come back. She's such a gem.) One surprising departure ahead of season 3 was Nathan Lane (Teddy Dimas), who was unavailable for filming due to his Broadway play Pictures from Home. Lane confirmed to Deadline that he would love to return to the series, meaning we could also see the return of Teddy.
